Des Moines, IA has a robust biking community with trails throughout the city. The best part of many of these routes is they travel by a variety of restaurants, bars, and breweries. The trail starts near Principal Park, follows the Des Moines river south towards Easter Lake to the start of the Summerset Bike trail, and winds down the old train line from Carlise to Indianola. Along this scenic ride, you’ll see protected wetlands, Banner State Park, and old train bridges.

If you’re looking for the perfect 25-mile bike ride in Central Iowa that leads right to a brewery, this ride is perfect for novice and experienced riders alike. It currently is mostly paved, with the exception of a short half-mile stretch of gravel. In 2022 the trail will be completely paved.

Ending in historic Indianola, Iowa means you can explore a new town and brewery. West Hill Brewing Co has a bike-friendly beer garden with plenty of space to relax after a ride with a tasty craft beer. If you’re in need of a post-ride snack, many days there are fun food trucks parked out front or the town square has a ton of great restaurants that offer take-out options. From bike racks to water bottle refills, this is a stop that will become a regular favorite.
